How to Buy Train Tickets for Yunnan as a Foreign Traveler

A passport-based guide to official booking, station names, ticket status, boarding and fragile connections.

10 min read

The safest way to buy a train ticket for Yunnan is through China Railway's official 12306 website or app. Enter your name and passport details exactly as shown on the passport, keep the original passport with you, and check that the order says a ticket has actually been issued. A waitlist request, a payment record, a screenshot or a route marked “not yet on sale” is not the same as a confirmed ticket.

This guide was verified on September 19, 2026. It covers domestic rail journeys within China, including routes such as Kunming–Dali, Kunming–Lijiang and Kunming–Shangri-La. It does not cover the international China–Laos train or Hong Kong cross-boundary services, which have additional document and border requirements.

Start with the official 12306 channel

China Railway lists the 12306 website and app, station ticket counters, ticket machines and authorized agencies as official purchase channels. For most international visitors planning independently, the 12306 English website or app is the clearest starting point.

The official English website accepts valid foreign passports. Passenger details must match the travel document exactly. Use the passport you will carry on the journey; do not shorten, rearrange or casually transliterate the name. When buying for another traveler, enter that passenger's own document details rather than the buyer's.

Third-party platforms can be convenient, but the railway states that it will not handle problems caused by purchases made on other websites. Before using an intermediary, check who issues the ticket, whether a booking is only a request, how refunds return to you and who provides support if passport verification fails.

Understand the four different booking states

Foreign travelers often see several similar-looking screens that do not mean the same thing.

Ticket issued: the train, date, passenger, carriage and seat or berth are confirmed. This is the status an itinerary can rely on.

Waitlist submitted: you have requested a seat if inventory becomes available. It is not yet a ticket. Do not promise a connection, room arrival or same-day flight around it.

Not yet on sale or timetable adjustment: the railway may not have released inventory for that service. This does not automatically mean the train is cancelled. Recheck the official listing rather than buying a substitute from an unknown seller.

Payment or itinerary record: a payment screen, printed itinerary sheet or reimbursement receipt is not itself a boarding credential. The official FAQ explicitly says the itinerary information sheet cannot be used as a ticket.

During the 2026 National Day sales period, a local report found that many daytime trains from Kunming toward Dali, Lijiang, Shangri-La and other popular destinations had sold out or moved to waitlist status within roughly two hours of release on September 17. Some other services were still marked for later sale or timetable adjustment. The short-term lesson is not that every Yunnan train always sells out; it is that status must be read accurately and an unissued request must not be treated as confirmed.

Choose the correct station before paying

Kunming and Kunming South are different stations. A search result for “Kunming” is not permission to arrive at whichever station is closer to your hotel. Check the full station name on every segment.

Save these details offline:

  • train number and departure date;
  • full departure and arrival station names in English and Chinese;
  • scheduled departure time;
  • passenger name and passport number;
  • order status and ticket details;
  • the route from your hotel to the correct station.

Allow extra time if the station is unfamiliar, if you need a staffed service channel, or if you are traveling during a public holiday. Our guide to [traveling in Yunnan during Chinese public holidays](/en/journal/yunnan-public-holiday-travel) explains why a normal low-season connection can become fragile.

What do you need to board?

China Railway uses real-name tickets. Carry the original valid passport used to buy the ticket. The official FAQ instructs e-ticket passengers to retain the ticket information and present the valid identity document used for the purchase when entering, leaving and boarding.

Do not rely on a passport photo, booking screenshot or printed itinerary sheet as a substitute for the original document. Keep the order accessible on your phone, but treat it as supporting information rather than the identity credential.

Follow station instructions at the gates. If the automated process does not resolve your document, allow time to ask at a staffed channel. Do not assume every ticket machine or gate handles every foreign document in exactly the same way.

A practical booking sequence

First, fix the international arrival and departure dates. Next, identify the domestic train segments the route cannot work without. Book those before optional day trips, meals or weather-sensitive experiences.

For a multi-city Yunnan journey, confirm the exact sequence before buying separate tickets. Dali, Lijiang and Shangri-La are not interchangeable stops, and a fast-looking connection can become risky when it includes luggage, a station transfer or an international flight.

A useful order is:

1. international transport;
2. essential Yunnan intercity trains or domestic flights;
3. first and last nights, plus accommodation at the busiest stop;
4. reservation-dependent sights;
5. flexible local activities.

This sequence protects the journey without making every hour non-refundable. See [how many days you need in Yunnan](/en/journal/how-many-days-yunnan) before compressing several regions into one ticket chain.

Changes, refunds and missed connections

The 12306 English service supports ticket purchase, changes, refunds and destination changes. Conditions, availability, cut-off times and fees can change, so use the current order page and official rules rather than an old screenshot or travel forum.

Refunds normally return through the original payment route. Printed reimbursement receipts and cash transactions can add steps. If another person or platform paid, confirm before purchase who controls changes and where the money will return.

Do not build an international departure around an unconfirmed same-day train. Even with an issued ticket, weather, inspections and operational changes can affect travel. A buffer before a flight is more valuable than adding one final sight.

If you cannot get your preferred train

First, check another time on the same day. Then check whether the service is genuinely sold out, on waitlist, or simply not yet released. Consider a different travel date or remove one city before adding a complicated sequence of transfers.

A domestic flight or road transfer may be an alternative, but it is not automatically faster or safer. Compare airport access, luggage rules, mountain roads, weather and the final arrival time. Do not accept an unlicensed car or an unusually low private-transfer offer merely because the train is difficult to obtain.

Keep the railway plan connected to the rest of the trip

The train ticket is only one part of arrival. Save the hotel's Chinese name, address and telephone number, and confirm late check-in if needed. Our [Yunnan hotel guide for foreign travelers](/en/journal/book-yunnan-hotels-foreign-travelers) covers passport check-in and accommodation registration.

If your China entry status is visa-free or transit-based, rail travel does not replace the need to meet the applicable entry conditions. Review [what to prepare for visa-free entry](/en/journal/china-visa-free-entry-preparation) and use official immigration advice for individual eligibility.

Frequently asked questions

Can a foreign traveler buy a Yunnan train ticket on 12306?

Yes. The official English website accepts a valid foreign passport. Enter the passenger's details exactly as shown on the passport and carry that original passport for the journey.

Is a waitlist request a confirmed train ticket?

No. It is a request for inventory that may become available. Only treat the journey as confirmed after the system shows that the ticket has been issued.

Does “not yet on sale” mean the train is cancelled?

Not necessarily. Inventory may be released later or the timetable may be under adjustment. Recheck the official 12306 listing.

Can I board with a screenshot or itinerary sheet?

Do not rely on either as a substitute for the original passport used for booking. China Railway states that the itinerary information sheet cannot be used as a ticket.

Are Kunming and Kunming South the same station?

No. They are different stations. Check the exact departure station on the ticket and plan the hotel-to-station journey accordingly.

Can Project Unicorn guarantee a train ticket?

No. Availability is controlled by China Railway and changes in real time. Project Unicorn can help design a route with realistic station choices and buffers, but should not describe a ticket as confirmed until it has been issued.

Sources and verification

Verified September 19, 2026:

Train schedules, sales windows, inventory, fares, refund conditions and station procedures are time-sensitive. Recheck 12306 before travel. If you want help reviewing a Yunnan route, share the exact travel dates and tickets already issued; Project Unicorn can identify fragile connections and pacing issues, but cannot guarantee inventory or railway operations.
