For most first-time visitors, flying into Kunming is the simplest entry. A confirmed international train through Mohan can suit a Laos–Yunnan itinerary. A road crossing is useful only when the exact passenger channel, transport on both sides and your entry basis have all been confirmed. “The port is open,” “my nationality is visa-free” and “my seat is issued” are three different facts. Verify all three before building the rest of the trip.
Yunnan borders Myanmar, Laos and Vietnam and has airports, railway ports and road ports. That makes an overland arrival look easy on a map. In practice, the right choice depends less on distance than on immigration eligibility, the channel actually handling international passengers, the transport operator and the onward connection after inspection.
This guide is a decision framework, not a live list of opening hours. Port operations, passenger channels, ticket inventory and immigration policies can change. Recheck with the National Immigration Administration, the actual carrier and the relevant port immediately before travel.
Start with your legal basis for entry
Before choosing a border, decide which rule you are using:
- a valid Chinese visa;
- a mutual or unilateral visa exemption applying to your passport and purpose;
- the 240-hour visa-free transit policy; or
- another narrowly defined group policy.
These routes are not interchangeable. A traveler using ordinary visa-free entry may have different conditions from someone requesting 240-hour transit. Transit requires an eligible nationality, a confirmed onward journey to a third country or region, and use of a designated port. Returning to the country from which you just arrived normally does not create the required third-country itinerary.
The National Immigration Administration’s current list includes four Yunnan entries for 240-hour transit: Kunming Changshui Airport, Lijiang Sanyi Airport, Mohan by rail or road, and Hekou by road. A place being an international port does not automatically put it on this policy list. Policies also change, so verify the current list rather than relying on an old screenshot.
Entry is still decided by border authorities. A visa, exemption or transit eligibility is not a guarantee of admission.
When flying is the sensible choice
Air is usually the easiest option when Yunnan is your first destination in China, when your arrival time is tight, or when you need predictable domestic connections. Kunming has the broadest onward network in the province. Lijiang can be practical for a northern Yunnan itinerary when an international service actually operates on your date.
Confirm:
- the airport where immigration will occur;
- whether baggage must be collected and rechecked;
- the minimum connection time;
- the terminal and actual operating carrier;
- whether the onward flight is on the same ticket;
- transport after a late arrival.
If you enter China first in Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu or another city and then fly domestically to Kunming, immigration normally takes place at that first Chinese entry point—not at the final Yunnan airport.
When the international train through Mohan works
The China–Laos Railway can make sense when Laos and southern Yunnan form one continuous journey. The international train uses Mohan on the Chinese side and Boten on the Lao side.
A train timetable found online is not a ticket. Check the date of sale, passport-name match, issued status, departure station and international check-in instructions. Arrive earlier than for a domestic train because immigration and customs take place as part of the international journey.
Do not split the border process into imaginary domestic segments. A domestic ticket to Mohan does not itself provide passage into Laos, and reaching Boten separately does not guarantee a same-day international connection.
For booking and document details, read the China–Laos Railway guide and the foreign traveler’s Yunnan train-ticket guide.
Why a road crossing needs more verification
“Road port” can describe different realities: scheduled international bus service, private vehicle processing, pedestrian movement, local border traffic or cargo. It does not promise that a foreign tourist can arrive at any hour and simply walk across.
Before using Mohan, Hekou, Ruili, Daluo or another road port, confirm the exact crossing and channel with the responsible authority and real carrier. Ask:
- Are ordinary foreign passport holders being processed through this passenger channel?
- What are the operating hours on the travel date?
- Is the international bus or other transport actually running?
- Where does it depart and where does it drop passengers after inspection?
- Is advance registration required?
- What happens if one side closes earlier or a service is cancelled?
- How will you continue from the border town?
Do not hire an informal driver who proposes bypassing an official checkpoint. A domestic ride to a border town is not an international transfer.
Taking a private or foreign-registered vehicle across is a separate project involving vehicle documents, driver eligibility, temporary import procedures, insurance and approvals. A foreign driving licence or International Driving Permit alone does not authorize driving in mainland China. See the Yunnan self-drive guide.
Keep four confirmations separate
Use four rows in your itinerary:
1. Entry basis confirmed: visa or applicable exemption checked for this passport, purpose and date.
2. Port confirmed: the selected port and passenger channel accept that route.
3. Transport confirmed: ticket is issued—not merely searched, requested or waitlisted.
4. Onward plan confirmed: transfer from the port to the next hotel or city is realistic.
One green row does not turn the others green. This prevents a common failure: buying a domestic hotel and train schedule around a cross-border segment that has never been confirmed.
Allow time for inspection and recovery
At a border, queues, document questions and customs checks can break a tightly timed connection. Do not place a non-refundable domestic flight or the last train of the day immediately after an overland arrival.
Carry:
- the passport used for every booking;
- visa or evidence relevant to the applicable exemption;
- confirmed onward ticket when using transit;
- first-night hotel name, address and phone in Chinese;
- offline copies of bookings;
- permitted payment options and a backup;
- contact details for the actual carrier.
The China arrival card is separate from a visa and from customs declarations. Review the China arrival-card guide before departure.
Holiday traffic is a warning, not a permanent forecast
For the 2026 National Day holiday, reporting based on border-authority forecasts expected Yunnan’s ports to exceed 110,000 crossings on the busiest day, with about 70,000 passengers across the holiday at Kunming airport and 8,400 at Mohan railway port. These figures describe a specific peak period; they do not predict your travel date or prove ticket availability.
The useful long-term lesson is to add buffer during Chinese public holidays and verify operating notices close to departure. See the Yunnan public-holiday guide.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can every foreign traveler enter Yunnan through Mohan or Hekou?
No. The port, passenger channel and your visa or exemption must all apply. Confirm the exact route before buying connecting travel.
Can I use 240-hour visa-free transit to travel from Laos into Yunnan?
Possibly, if your nationality is eligible, you use a designated port, hold a confirmed onward ticket to a third country or region and meet all current conditions. Laos–China–Laos is not a third-country transit itinerary.
Is Mohan railway port the same as Mohan road port?
No. They are different channels with different transport and procedures. Use the one shown on your confirmed international itinerary.
Can I cross with a rental car from a neighboring country?
Do not assume so. Cross-border vehicles require separate documentation, insurance, driver eligibility and approvals. Ordinary rental terms often prohibit international use.
Where do I complete immigration if I connect through another Chinese city?
Normally at the first Chinese port of entry before continuing on a domestic service. Confirm baggage and transfer steps with the operating airline.
How early should I arrive for an international train or bus?
Follow the carrier and port instruction for that exact service. Allow substantially more time than for a domestic departure and do not rely on the last onward connection.

Verified October 1, 2026. Policy guidance uses the National Immigration Administration’s August 20, 2026 transit-policy page and its current port list and arrival-card notice. Official railway information and tickets should be checked through China Railway 12306. The holiday trigger was the September 30, 2026 border-flow forecast. Policies, passenger channels, operating hours and tickets can change; verify again before travel.
